Can I Still Exercise If I Have Varicose Veins?

Although swollen, twisted, and enlarged veins are often associated with a sedentary lifestyle, varicose veins can develop in active people, too. Our active patients ask if they can continue their exercise regimen during treatment. The answer, of course, is yes. In fact, regular physical activity is one of the steps that promote vein health. During exercise, blood is pumped back to the heart for oxygenation, which improves blood flow into the leg muscles.

Certain exercises work extremely well for promoting vein health and preventing the appearance of unsightly, knobby varicose veins. These exercises help improve blood flow to the calves, which strengthens the veins.

  • Walking, light jogging
  • Low impact machine exercises such as the elliptical and stationary bike
  • Water aerobics and swimming
  • Light bodyweight exercises such as lunges and calf raises
  • Lifting with light weights (be careful not to lift weights that are too heavy)
